New strategy for sustainable dairy farming

Arla recently launched their sustainable dairy farming strategy which E-CO2 is proud to have been working with Arla to develop and will continue to work on the delivery of the strategy over the next three years. A key part of the work will be encouraging Arla members to reduce their carbon footprint, become more efficient and ultimately make more money. E-CO2 will be providing Arla farmer members with bespoke data collection software, advisory tools and farmer Apps to help drive and measure the strategy.

Dairy farmers in Europe are already among some of the most efficient in the world in terms of their impact on the climate. Work carried out by E-CO2 aims to help improve the efficiency of Arla Dairy farms further.

Over the past three years E-CO2 has carried out carbon footprint assessments on over 900 Arla farms in the UK. Those surveyed in all three years scored an 8% reduction in carbon footprint and an 11% drop in nitrogen use, while increasing production by 7%.The new Arla dairy farm strategy continues with these free farm carbon assessments and farm workshops.

The new strategy is part of the Arla drive to reduce the carbon footprint per kilogramme of milk from its members’ farms by 30% by 2020, compared with 1990 levels. This is an aim of Arla Global and E-CO2 is also working with Arla Global Member Services to measure progress outside of the UK using the E-CO2 IDF compliant carbon calculator.
