Greenfields Africa’s Jiggers Project Update

E-CO2 welcomed Brian Hatton, Fund Director of Greenfields Africa to our offices today to hear about the work that the charity are undertaking. Greenfields Africa has been supported by E-CO2 and sister company, CMS UK for a number of years and it was a good opportunity to hear about what our investment has meant for the communities that the charity are working with.

Brian talked about the two motorbikes that were purchased with donations from the businesses for use by health workers in Kenya as part of the ‘Jiggers’ eradication programme. Jiggers are sand fleas that burrow into the soft tissues between the toes and under the toenails of humans to feed on blood. They cause painful and disfiguring lesions, which can lead to severe inflammation, ulceration, fibrosis, gangrene, tetanus, loss of toenails, clubfoot and lameness. 10 million people are infected with Jiggers in Kenya, and up to 2 million children are out of school due to Jigger related problems.

Brian thanked us for our continued support and outlined some of the other projects that they are carrying forward over the next few years.
